Takeshi Murata

Takeshi Murata born in 1974 in Chicago, USA.

Murata creates animated works that explore the lifespan of moving images and their role in the shaping of shared cultural histories. Whether abstracting footage culled from 1980s blockbusters like Rambo, or slowing down the introductory credit sequence of the 1970s sitcom Three’s Company, as well as reworking the melodramatic prize package revealing moments from the game show, The Price is Right, he employs a variety of animation processes to illustrate the material decay of media narratives. Murata resurrects iconographic moments from popular culture, synthesises their essence and reconstructs them into dream-like spaces. His evolving processes range from intricate hand-drawn animations, to installations accenting the defects and broken codes of film, advertising and pop culture.

Recent solo exhibitions include Takeshi Murata, Halsey Mckay Gallery, East Hampton, NY; Takeshi Murata, Kunsthall Stavanger, Stavanger; OM Rider at Salon 94, New York; Midnight at Ratio 3, San Francisco; Mortality, Museum of Art and Design, New York. Murata received a BFA in Film/Video/ Animation from the Rhode Island School of Design.
